Linda K. Robinson, Ph.D.

Associate Vice Chancellor, Office of Equity, Diversity and Compliance

Dr. Robinson is responsible for oversight of the Office of Equity, Diversity and Compliance (EDC). She assumes the responsibility for leading the university to take intentional steps that ensure equal access and opportunity. In her role as the university’s chief diversity officer, she is the point person for university-wide diversity efforts and chief collaborator/coordinator of university diversity initiatives, plans, and happenings. She bears accountability for the actualization of the university’s stated commitment to diversity. 

Robinson works closely with the assistant vice chancellor for student diversity, and all administrators, units, and organizations to further ASU’s leadership in the region and around the world in providing a stimulating, inclusive community with a climate that effectively prepares our students to live and flourish in a global society.EDC Staff 2008

She is charged to support the university and hiring committees in the vigorous recruitment of an increasingly diverse faculty, staff, and student body; to provide the upper administration with input relative to equity, diversity and compliance as they apply to all university plans, processes, procedures, and functions; and to assist members of the university community in resolving concerns about unlawful harassment. 

Dr. Robinson has extensive human relations background and experience, including but not limited to: certifications in internal investigations, human resource management, affirmative action plan development, complaint resolution and investigation techniques, equal employment and affirmative action law, and employment law compliance.  She holds certification in employment mediation from Carolina Dispute Settlement Services and is trained in community mediation, employment mediation, and juvenile offender mediation by the Mediation Network of North Carolina. She has volunteered as an employment mediator and a community mediator for the North Carolina Office of State Personnel and the Blue Ridge Settlement Dispute Center respectively. To complement these experiences, she holds certification in both beginning and advanced training of trainers diversity workshops from the National MultiCultural Institute in Washington, D.C.

She joined the Equity Office staff as assistant director in 1997 with responsibility for outreach education and problem resolution.  She was named director of the Equity Office in May 2002, and associate vice chancellor when the Equity Office became the Office of Equity, Diversity and Compliance in late 2006. 

In 2000, Linda earned a Ph.D. in Interdisciplinary Studies with an emphasis on equity and diversity studies from the Union Institute and University in Cincinnati, OH. Her dissertation is entitled “The Influence of Curricular and Co-Curricular Experiences on Students' Openness to Diversity at a Predominantly White, State-Supported University in the South.” From 1984-1997, Linda was the head women's basketball coach at Appalachian, and from 1979-1984, she was the head basketball coach and a faculty member at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke. She received B.S. and M.A. degrees in health, physical education and recreation from Mars Hill College in 1978 and ASU in 1979, respectively.

Linda M. Foulsham

Director of AA/EEO Compliance

As the director of AA/EEO Compliance, Linda provides advice and counsel to academic and administrative units and university constituencies on all matters related to affirmative action and equal employment opportunity. Linda oversees the AA/EEO components of EPA job searches on campus, closely monitors the university’s AA/EEO plans, and reviews university policies and practices for compliance with state and federal law.  

Linda responds to complaints of harassment and/or discrimination filed by university employees and students. She conducts investigations in accordance with the university’s nondiscrimination policies and assists with dispute resolution.  Linda is available to provide educational and professional development programs on issues related to affirmative action, equal employment opportunity and other equity issues.

Linda has extensive experience as a practicing attorney in the areas of labor and employment, and higher education. She joined the university in the fall of 2007 after serving as Assistant General Counsel for the University System of New Hampshire. 

Linda earned a B.A. degree in political science from the University of New Hampshire in 1984, and a J.D. degree from Suffolk University Law School in 1987. 

Susan King

Education Director

Susan King is responsible for directing and developing diversity education and training programs for classes, student organizations, units, and residence halls at Appalachian, as well as for organizations in the greater community, upon request. Workshops are tailored to the needs of the class, organization or sponsoring agency. Her interactive presentations explore - in numerous ways and from various angles - the fundamental but complex concept of building respectful living, learning, and working environments by valuing and celebrating differences. Susan's responsibilities also include writing, editing and producing articles, documents, newsletters, and promotional materials representing the office’s mission and services, supervising the Open Door program, heading the communication and publicity efforts for the annual Diversity Celebration and State Employees Combined Campaign, processing and responding to requests for funds, and providing in-kind services for diversity events produced by other units and organizations. Susan is a member of the Diversity Celebration planning committee, the Walk for Awareness planning committee, and a member of the ASU Combined Campaign leadership team.

Susan earned a B.A. degree in theatre performance from Mars Hill College in 1976. From 1976-1998 she worked in professional theatre as an actor, director and general manager. She came to ASU in 1998.

Terri Lockwood

Administrative Supervisor

Terri Lockwood is the administrative assistant to both the associate vice chancellor of Equity, Diversity and Compliance and the director of AA/EEO compliance. She is certified in internal investigations through the Council on Education in Management in partnership with The George Washington University. Terri is also certified by the state of North Carolina as a notary public.

Working with the vice chancellor of EDC, Terri assists in coordinating the annual search process for the Faculty Fellows Program. The Faculty Fellows Program is designed to foster a greater consciousness of diversity within the university community by recruiting and hiring faculty with life experiences unique to underrepresented populations.

Terri maintains nine university supported financial funds including five state funds, three development funds, and one special funds account. Experienced in Web design, Terri previously managed several university supported Web sites for various offices and organizations including sites for the Office of Equity, Diversity and Compliance (EDC), Human Resource Service’s EPA/Faculty employment page, Appalachian’s State Employee’s Combined Campaign (SECC), the Black Faculty and Staff Association (BFSA), the Diversity Celebration and Faculty/Staff Christian Fellowship (FSCF).

A graduate of Appalachian State University, Terri earned a B.S. degree in communication with a minor in business management, and is currently pursuing a master’s degree in higher education administration.
